In this first expansion to Wingspan, we increase the scope of the world to include the regal, beautiful, and varied birds of Europe. These birds feature a variety of new abilities, including a number of birds with round end abilities, abilities that increase interaction between players, and birds that benefit from excess cards/food. Along with the new bonus cards, they’re designed to be shuffled into the original decks of cards (and cards from future expansions).
The European Expansion also includes an additional tray for storing the growing collection of birds (past, present, and future), as well as 15 purple eggs, extra food tokens, and a colorful new scorepad designed for both multi-player and single-player scoring.
This is a review for the expansion pack that goes with the base game, Wingspan, which I have also reviewed. You can’t use this pack without the base game.
Really, if you love this game, getting this expansion is a no-brainer. The expansion advances the game, with a good mix of a whole lot more more birds, end-of-round goals, new bird powers, bonus cards and some extra food and eggs. The extra powers in particular really enhance the game. The Oceania expansion is also awesome (and how could you not get it, living in Australia!?), but it does use a slightly different board, a few new rules and a new type of food (nectar). The European expansion is a bit easier to add as it does not require learning a slightly different way of playing. When I got the base game and this expansion, the Oceania version had not yet been released. If you love this game, you’ll probably end up getting all the expansions anyway :D.
